How Neurons in the brain network. As the brain processes information, electrical oscillations arise form the coordination of activity in organized networks of neurons. These patterns can be observed in small numbers of cells (micro-scale) and in large waves outside of the head (macro-scale) when large numbers of neurons coordinate their activity.
My research is focused on neurodynamics of musical improvisations by comparing brain activity during the execution of novel musical sequences with the one produced during pre-learned musical sequences. As my interest is to explore the modulation of the brain activity during musical performance, I use EEG as the suited technique for addressing the temporal dynamics of the brain, together with other physiological signatures.
How coral reefs recover from stress. Corals have the ability to survive death. They can break into little pieces (similar to succulent fragments). In addition to this I study what happens when corals die. There is a creepy Tim Burton-directed underworld of creatures that invade dead (and sometimes still living) corals.
Many animals have an unusual structure such as the horn in beetle and peacock tail. Some have a weird display behavior such as a gaping display in a sarcastic fringehead, the fish in California. I would like to know how and why these unique structures and displays have been evolved in this world. Answering these kinds of questions will benefit both academic and and non-academic since we can use this knowledge to improve human life. One example is using the kingfisher bird head structure as a model to make the Shinkansen Bullet Train, the fastest train in the world. At the end, I hope that the result I found can serve as a key to unlock human curiosities, and I hope to expand this solid science data to other non-scientific fields such as fashion design or communication.
Sasha's research focuses on interrelated aspects of weather, climate and society. His professional interests include understanding the links between regional weather extremes and large-scale climate variability and change, long-range climate prediction, the atmospheric water cycle, precipitation and drought, heat waves, cold snaps, marine layer clouds, atmospheric rivers, Santa Ana winds, extreme weather and climate impacts on wildfire, energy, ecosystems, water resource and public health, climate influence on society and human influence on climate.
Computer music deals with how computers understand and process audio. It is closer to computer science than music. My research in particular focuses on audio for robotics. My dissertation is on audio applications for mobile robit networks. I also do a lot of work with "physical computing," which refers to ways in which computer can interact with the physical world through sensors, cameras, microphones, and other types of input and output. I do a lot electronic prototyping, including for wearable sensors and controllers.
Kids Day at the Beach is an annual non-profit fundraiser for the children of St. Vincent de Paul homeless shelter.
Each year we shuttle a bus load of children from the shelter to La Jolla Shores beach to enjoy a day of ocean, sun and picnic.
These children need a day to just be a kid and not worry where they will sleep and have their next meal.
San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation is partnering with Kids Day at the Beach to provide the children with swimming lessons.
